What does recovery from burnout look like?

Recovering from burnout can look different for each person.

The burnout recovery process varies from person to person due to the severity of the exhaustion, disconnection and ineffectiveness that you have survived.

On the burnout recovery journey, you may start to notice a variety of changes in how you approach your day-to-day life, changes to your behavior and even changes in what you value. Here are 4 things that could happen when you start recovering from burnout:

You start taking your self-care (really) seriously.

On your recovery journey, you may notice that your physical, mental and spiritual health will no longer take a back seat. You may reprioritize your self-care, your well-being and your boundaries in ways you didn’t think were possible before.

On your burnout recovery journey, you may naturally become more courageous and assertive in protecting what’s important to you.

You finally get your energy back.

Recovering from burnout can feel like truly getting the space and time you need to recharge and heal from the chronic stress and exhaustion you’ve been feeling. On the recovery journey, you may practice setting and maintaining boundaries that finally preserve your previous energy. There is a good chance that you may finally feel rested, energetic and at ease again.

You might discover (or rediscover) hobbies you love.

Recovering from burnout may allow you to tap into childhood pastimes and leisurely hobbies that simply bring you joy. Instead of overworking and engaging in toxic productivity, you may reprioritize the things that make you smile, are fun and have no purpose other than being enjoyable.

At this stage of your journey, you may start spending time and energy on activities that have absolutely, positively nothing to do with your professional life (without the side of guilt).

You may develop a passionate love for yourself.

Recovering from burnout may give you the opportunity to disconnect from always “doing” and appreciate who you are outside of all that you accomplish and achieve.

This life-changing journey may steer you into the direction of developing a healthy, safe and loving relationship with yourself. Could it be that your favorite version of yourself is on the other side of recovering from burnout?
